Liverpool have made Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas a potential January signing, as Reds boss Brendan Rodgers looks to bring in competition for Belgian shot-stopper Simon Mingolet, according to reports.
Former Barcelona star goalkeeper Victor Valdes was a likely candidate but a deal never materialised as the Anfield club have been linked with several goalkeepers since the summer, and now Rodgers has turned his attention to Valdes’ Spanish compatriot Casillas.
The Real Madrid legend and arguably one of the best goalkeepers of his generation has never recovered from his time at the sidelines under Jose Mourinho at Real, when the Portuguese boss dropped the Spain international for Diego Lopez.
He has been struggling for form for club and country, and with Real boss Carlo Ancelotti bringing in Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas as well as being inked with Chelsea’s Petr Cech, Casillas has become unsettled.
Rodgers has not been overly impressed with Mingolet’s form this season during the Merseysiders slow start to the season in where the former Sunderland man struggled to impose himself in the box and has made a few costly mistakes for his side, and the idea is to bring a good secondary goalkeeper to challenge, and possibly usurp, Mingolet’s current position.
