Southampton striker Shane Long has expressed his relief after scoring at the 12th attempt with the Saints, scoring his first goal for the St Mary’s side following his £12m summer move from Hull City in their 3-2 English Capital One Cup win at Stoke City on Wednesday.
“It’s a purely selfish thing, getting that first goal under your belt and I’m obviously delighted to have got it,” the Republic of Ireland international said.
“Not scoring wasn’t getting me down too much. It’s always easier when the team is doing so well and everybody’s chipping in with goals. But it’s obviously nice to get that goal, and to come out of Stoke with a win is always hard, especially after that second half, but we showed our character again to dig in and get a result when it was needed.”
