Liverpool are set to open talks with midfielder and captain Steven Gerrard over a one-year contract extension at Anfield to his current contract, according to reports, with the former England international’s contract with the Reds running out at the end of the season, and admitted yesterday he would be willing to look elsewhere if his boyhood club failed to offer him a new deal.

Reports now suggest the 34-year-old is due to sit down with the Anfield hierarchy to discuss new terms, potentially keeping him on Merseyside until 2016, should Gerrard not be handed a new deal by January, he  will be free to talk to foreign clubs, with whom he can sign a pre-contract.

But Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is said to be determined to prevent that happening, with all parties hoping a one-year extension can be signed before the transfer window opens.
