Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will look to splash the cash on at least one central defender, with Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk on the list.
Wenger is currently lacking in numbers at the back with injuries to Laurent Koscielny and Mathieu Debuchy, while the Gunners’ French manager has failed to find a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen, who left for Barcelona.
Wenger will be handed a sizable transfer budget despite the Emirates Stadium club’s struggles this season, and still appears to have the backing of the board.
Celtic’s Van Dijk has been on Wenger’s radar for some time now but Celtic have so far managed to keep hold, despite strong interest from a number of clubs.
However, after failing to make it through the group stages of the UEFA Champions’ League this season, the Scottish Premier League side will have to seriously consider any big bids for the defender, and Wenger may be about to test their resolve.
West Ham United’s Winston Reid is also believed to be a target as Wenger looks to bring in two new defenders.
