Olympiakos defender Eric Abidal, who returned playing football after undergoing a liver transplant, bowed out on a winning note on Wednesday as his side beat Panionios 2-0 in Matchday 13 of the Greek Super League.
The defending Greek champions’ manager Michel confirmed after the game that Abidal had played his last game and the 35-year-old would officially announce his retirement at a press conference on Friday.
Michel told Nova TV that the former France international, who was capped 67 times internationally, “had made his decision to leave Olympiacos two months ago.”
“I am proud to have been his coach this season. Personal decisions are above those of the pitch,” he added.
Abidal, a former Barcelona and Monaco man, played the whole 90 minutes as two goals from striker Kostas Mitroglou secured the win in a match watched by only around 5,000 fans at the Karaiskakis Stadium.
