Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has backed his old side to go on a strong run for the English Premier League title this season in the same manner that Liverpool did last season.
Louis van Gaal’s side are on a good run of form at the moment with seven wins out of their last eight league games, with a convincing 3-1 home victory against Newcastle United the latest of a recent run of results.
With no distraction of European football after a disappointing 7th place finish last season, United are in a similar position to that of Liverpool last season, as they focused solely on the league and came close to claiming a shock title win towards the end of the campaign, though they did ultimately miss out to eventual champions Manchester City – who did play in the UEFA Champions’ League that season.
Scholes is optimistic that the Red Devils can keep taking advantage of their lack of games and become genuine competitors alongside Chelsea and local rivals City this term.
“If United win their next two games, I wouldn’t be surprised if they do what Liverpool did last year – go on a great run, a big run, and put pressure on the top two,” he said.
“Then, once you get to the Champions League, United will have the free weeks and hopefully they can take advantage.”
