Ajax manager Frank de Boer has emerged as a top managerial target for Newcastle United, which has been described as a bold approach from Magpies owner Mike Ashley.

44-year-old De Boer is seen by the Toon as a master tactician who can take the club to new levels following Alan Pardew’s departure to Crystal Palace.

Caretaker John Carver, who was in charge during the English Premier League draw with Burnley and the English FA Cup defeat by Leicester City, is likely to remain in charge for the remainder of the current campaign.

The St James’ Park side know De Boer, who is rated by Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal as one of the biggest coaching talents in Europe, will not renege on his contract at Amsterdam Arena mid-season, but they have put him at the top of a five-man shortlist and are willing to wait until summer.
