Arsenal attack best since Henry’s days at the club – Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Jack Wilshere’s latest return from injury means he is selecting from the most potent attacking line-up he has had at his disposal for a decade.

A squad featuring the talents of Danny Welbeck, Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott, Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla and Wilshere offers Wenger thrilling attacking options, as the French boss compared his 2015 Gunners attack to some of the best he has had during his 18 years at the club.

“A prolific Premier League attack should score between 70 to 100 goals in a season. We are not there yet, but this attack is our best since Thierry Henry’s days,” Wenger told reporters.

“This one has the most potential since Thierry’s time and this weekend is the first time we have been able to line them up all together, so we are yet to see what they are capable of achieving.”

“Giroud’s style is less elegant than strikers before him like Robin van Persie, but he has progressed a lot and he is now a complete striker because he has added decisive passes to his game. He works for the team more than most players who contribute that many goals.”

Wenger went on to suggest Wilshere faces a battle to get into his star-studded Emirates outfit line-up, as he admitted he has selection dilemmas ahead of a hectic run of games that includes English Premier League, UEFA Champions’ League and English FA Cup matches.

“Of course everyone has a fight for a place in the team and no matter who plays, you always worry about the balance of the team,” he added.

“If you look at Santi [Cazorla], for example, until now he has maybe been our most consistent player and since he moved centrally, he has increased his influence as well.”

“In Cazorla and Ozil, Welbeck and Sanchez, it is a very offensive team and that means if you take one out and put Jack in it is exactly the same.”

“Jack is an offensive player, someone who can turn the game forward and win the ball. He can play wide so that means he can play on the right, on the left and in the middle, and with those positions there is fierce competition as well.”

“But when you look at our scheduling over the next month I’m happy with that as he will get games. It’s good to have him back.”

“He is exactly the same player as he was before he was injured. This injury was on his left ankle, whereas he had had all those previous problems on the right one. So it has been a straightforward injury and it has healed. Even so, it’s difficult to come back straight away [into the side] always, but it’s good he’s already back in contention.”
