Ever since the 21-year-old’s standout performances for Netherlands in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, transfer rumours have been swirling around PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay.
Manchester United – coached by then-Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal, Manchester City, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are among a host of other usual suspects of being linked with Moordrecht-born Depay throughout the 2014/15 European season, as the Philips Stadion star has scored 19 times in 25 Dutch Eredivisie games this season so far, not to mention another three strikes coming from six UEFA Europa League matches.
PSV director Marcel Brands admitted this week that Depay will almost certainly leave PSV in the summer.
53-year-old Brands told Dutch news agency ANP: “The chances are very high that he leaves. If you see what clubs are enquiring about him, they really are the best in Europe.
“When I talk for PSV I would say he is not ready and should continue here for another year. But I am realistic and if I worked at a big European club, I’d buy him without question.
“With a heavy heart [we would let him go], because a great player and a great guy leaves. But we are also proud that a boy from the academy is going to make such a step.”
