Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal must beat Chelsea in their English Premier League clash on Saturday to ignite their next campaign.
The second-placed Gunners are currently ten points behind league-leaders Chelsea, and manager Arsene Wenger hasn’t won a game against Blues boss Jose Mourinho in 12 attempts.
With Wenger’s men having won eight consecutive English top-flight matches, losing just twice this year so far and Chelsea losing just twice this season, should the home side at the Emirates Stadium take points of the Stamford Bridge outfit, however, it still won’t mean they have a realistic chance of catching the league champions elect.
According to former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher, a victory for Arsenal would give them the encouragement and self-belief to compete with Chelsea for the next title campaign.
“Arsene Wenger will know, if they want to compete and win trophies, Chelsea and Mourinho are going to be in the way so they have to start taking points off them,” he said.
“You could argue that it’s not mathematically out of Arsenal’s hands if they win but his game could, from Arsenal’s point of view if they won, give them more belief for next season than actually do damage to Chelsea this season.”
