Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher said that Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is starting to emerge as a real leader for Louis van Gaal’s side.
The former England international has seen Smalling become a vital figure in the heart of the United defence and has noticed some qualities in the 25-year-old’s blossoming phase.
“I think of late you can see the work Van Gaal’s done defensively on the training ground. Watching Smalling in clips we’ve done for Sky Sports recently, you can see he’s becoming more of a leader, more vocal,” he said.
“He seems to be the one pushing out of defence and giving instructions to different people, and that can only help his own confidence with a bit of maturity as he gets older and starts taking on more responsibility.”
