Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal could be set to welcome back three first-team players for his side’s English Premier League trip to Everton on Sunday.
Midfielders Michael Carrick and Daley Blind along with defender Phil Jones are back in contention, as the Dutch boss looks to get back to winning ways after last weekend’s 1-0 league loss to Chelsea.
Carrick (calf) has an outside chance of featuring at the Goodison Park, but Blind and Jones are more likely to come into Van Gaal’s squad for the Everton game.
Blind’s return could see Rooney switch back into a more preferred striker position rather than his defensive midfielder role, while youngster Paddy McNair may be replaced by Jones in the centre of defence.
A win against Everton will edge the Red Devils closer to securing a top-four place, and they currently lie eight points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool, however, Brendan Rodgers’ side have a game in hand.
