Chelsea are reportedly interested in Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld, who impressed while on loan at Southampton last season.
The 26-year-old Belgium international spent the season at St Mary’s Stadium on loan from Atletico, and his appearances have caught the eye of Blues manager Jose Mourinho.
The Saints look to secure the Alderweireld on a permanent basis, while Atletico have not ruled out keeping him, but news of the Stamford Bridge otufit’s interest may turn the player’s head.
Mourinho is said to be out looking for a new defender in the upcoming transfer window and will have no problem matching the £7 million valuation, while Alderweireld said he is insure of his future and is willing to wait and weigh his options.
“I really want to go to a club that really wants me,” he said.
“There are three options – stay with Atletico, stay with Southampton or go to another club. So we will see what happens.
“Southampton gave me that opportunity and it paid off, I think. I’ve had a fantastic year, I can’t lie about that, so, yes, I’d like to stay in the [English] Premier League.
