Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph was disappointed that his side couldn’t cause an upset over holders Arsenal after losing 4-0 to the Gunners in the English FA Cup Wembley Stadium Final on Saturday, where Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez, Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud netted.
The England international admitted that the North Londoners deserved the victory, but it didn’t stop him from banging the drum for the Villa Park outfit as he looked ahead to the upcoming years.
After the Final, manager Tim Sherwood said he wanted to build a “winning mentality” after several seasons of struggles, and Delph is positive that this can play out under the former Tottenham Hotspur boss.
“Arsenal showed why they deserved the win,” he told the club’s official website.
“We were up against it. We tried to dig deep but their quality shone through and we struggled.
“Arsenal will admit that’s one of their best performances of the season.
“We didn’t impose ourselves as much as we can do but they kept the ball well and tired us out.
“The manager said that we had it in us to cause an upset but we couldn’t find the performance.
“But a few weeks ago we would have snapped your hand off to stay in the Premier League and get to this FA Cup final.
“Now it’s important that we get a winning mentality.
“We have to forget about the result, some players will come through the door to strengthen us and I am sure we will get better and better.”
