Suarez to join Fiorentina

Atletico Madrid announced on Wednesday they have reached an agreement to sell midfielder Mario Suarez to Fiorentina for £10.5 million, with the Spain international being given permission to travel to Italy to complete his transfer to the Italian Serie A side.

The Colchoneros have thanked Suarez’s contribution to the Spanish La Liga club, after coming through the Atletico ranks and making 121 appearances during his time at the Vicente Calderon, scoring four goals, posting on their official Twitter page: “#ThanksMario for giving your all with the red and white. Atlético will always be your home. http://t.co/nclymBlYDp https://t.co/nVXXWgBYyD”

A statement on Atletico’s official website read: “Mario Suarez will play at Fiorentina. The two clubs have reached an agreement that will be formalised in the next few hours.

“The midfielder has been given permission by the club to travel to Italy to join the Serie A outfit.”

The statement added: “The Spain international ends a successful five-year cycle in which he has won a Primera Division title, a Copa del Rey, a Spanish Supercup, a Europa League and two European Super Cups.

“The club wishes to thank our youth team player and wishes him all the best in his new stage of his career and thanks him for his dedication and professionalism with which he has contributed to all the sporting success the club has achieved in recent years.”

Suarez has two years left on his contract at Atletico and was targeted by Inter earlier this summer, but is now set to join Fiorentina.
