Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has warned Red Devils forward Wayne Rooney that he is “running out of time” to win trophies with his country England.
The 29-year-old Three Lions captain is set to make it a century of caps internationally in England’s UEFA EURO 2016 qualifier against Slovenia this weekend, but like many other of his nation’s compatriots in the first team of past and present, the former Everton man is yet to win a trophy with England.
The striker is expected to become England’s all-time top-scorer, with currently 43 goals for his country so far, with only Sir Bobby Charlton, a former Manchester United player himself, scoring more, with 49.
However, Scholes, a former England international, believes Rooney’s lack of success with England will be on of his “greatest” regrets.
“Wayne has found tournament football that much harder and England’s failures there will surely be his greatest regret,” he wrote in his Independent column.
Scholes has also expressed that Rooney was “running out of time” for England.
Scholes said: “As a team England were not good enough, and post-2004 the story was the same. Wayne will have to balance his personal achievements with the failure to win anything with England. Celebrating caps and goals is important and it is right that Saturday will be about Wayne. But ultimately you are judged on trophies and he is running out of time to win one for England.”
