Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has put his lack of goals so far for the Merseysiders down to the tactics used by manager Brendan Rodgers.

The summer signing from Italian Serie A giants Milan has only netted once this season for the Reds, against Bulgarian side Ludogorets in the UEFA Champions’ League Group Stage, but the Italian says that is due to the formation Rodgers is using.

Daniel Sturridge is currently out injured adding to the sale of Luis Suarez, and while Rickie Lambert has been used more as a back-up striker, meant Balotelli has been up front on his own.

“I have never been a real, out-and-out striker – I have always been someone who goes around the pitch,” he told Sport magazine.

“If it was my choice, I would always go with two strikers. It’s the way I like to play, but Brendan asked me to play as the first striker.”
